A Word About Databases

AU and Thrift Library provide access to more than 200 databases, through subscriptions and Discus, to support student and faculty research. About 60% of these databases are searchable through the library catalog, but there are additional articles, eBooks, and even streaming audio and video, statistics, images, primary sources, scores, dissertations, and more to find in the additional databases. This page provides links to the most helpful databases for research in Instructional Design. You can access the full list at Thrift Library's Databases A-Z.

Discus is a collection of subscription databases with an array of resources ranging from books and magazines to maps and videos that are available for all South Carolina residents.

Scholarly Articles

Scholarly articles are crucial in research because they provide credible, peer-reviewed, and evidence-based information that advances knowledge in a given field. They ensure academic integrity, support arguments with well-researched data, and help researchers stay updated with the latest developments and theories. Thrift Library provides digital resources students need to support their work with articles available through our collection, through online databases, or through PASCAL Delivers.

The first step in finding resources should be Thrift Library's catalog. Here you will find digital holdings, articles through Open Access, full-text articles, and more. For videos and more information on navigating the catalog for online resources, review the Library DIY's Searching for Specific Information Sources. For most research, view the Articles tab or the Journals & Magazines tab for the best in-depth tutorials.

For a quick search in the Thrift Library Catalog, search for your topic, then click on Peer-reviewed Journals under Availability. This will eliminate magazine and newspaper articles and ensure you only see scholarly articles which have gone through a peer review selection process.

If you wish to see a list of all the library's education journals, go to Journal Search and click on the drop-down arrow beside Social Sciences, then Education. You will then see more specialized topics within Education. Click whichever you choose to see the list of related journals. Again, click the journal of your choice to see its coverage in available databases.

Citing Sources

Researchers need to cite sources whenever they reference someone else's ideas, research, or findings in their own work. This includes direct quotes, paraphrased ideas, statistics, or any material that isn't common knowledge. Whether you're building on previous research in a literature review, supporting your thesis with evidence, or discussing the work of others, citations show where your information comes from and give credit to the original authors. Proper citation is required in all types of academic writing, from essays to research papers and even presentations.

Citing sources is essential because it shows the foundation of your arguments, giving credit to the researchers whose work you've built upon. It also allows readers to trace your sources, check your claims, and verify your evidence. Proper citations help maintain academic integrity and avoid plagiarism, ensuring your work is both credible and reliable.

If you are citing resources found within Thrift Library's catalog, citations will be generated for you within each resources catalog listing. Simply click "Citation" under tools in the listing, choose APA (7th edition), and the citation can be pasted into your references page. Most databases will also generate citations for you as well. If you need to cite something yourself, see the information below on guides for APA Style.

APA Style

The APA Style is most often used in the social sciences, including education. This style features an abstract, in-text citations, and a reference page.

For an overview on citations, including the resources listed below, visit LibraryDIY

If you prefer to learn in a visual format, click the link below for a short tutorial featuring videos:

  • Tutorial on APA 7th edition Anderson students have access to tutorials on information literacy topics, including an overview on citations using APA.

Paper Elements and Format

APA Style papers can be written in two formats: Professional papers and Student papers. In this course, you will be using the professional style of APA which includes the following elements:

See the included links for more information and specific requirements for each element and the APA Paper Format page for all formatting instructions. Pay close attention to acceptable fonts, margins, alignment, etc.

In-text Citations

Researchers need to cite sources whenever they reference someone else's ideas, research, or findings in their own work. This includes direct quotes, paraphrased ideas, statistics, or any material that isn't common knowledge.

APA Style uses an author and date in-text citation system, as seen below:

There are often many questions about what requires an in-text citation and what doesn't. APA's Appropriate Level of Citation page can answer many of these questions.

ISBN: 9781771991513

Publication Date: 2016-06-01

Educational systems worldwide are facing an enormous shift as a result of sociocultural, political, economic, and technological changes. The technologies and practices that have developed over the last decade have been heralded as opportunities to transform both online and traditional education systems. While proponents of these new ideas often postulate that they have the potential to address the educational problems facing both students and institutions and that they could provide an opportunity to rethink the ways that education is organized and enacted, there is little evidence of emerging technologies and practices in use in online education. Because researchers and practitioners interested in these possibilities often reside in various disciplines and academic departments the sharing and dissemination of their work across often rigid boundaries is a formidable task.Contributors to Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning include individuals who are shaping the future of online learning with their innovative applications and investigations on the impact of issues such as openness, analytics, MOOCs, and social media. Building on work first published in Emerging Technologies in Distance Education, the contributors to this collection harness the dispersed knowledge in online education to provide a one-stop locale for work on emergent approaches in the field. Their conclusions will influence the adoption and success of these approaches to education and will enable researchers and practitioners to conceptualize, critique, and enhance their understanding of the foundations and applications of new technologies.

ISBN: 9781562869984

Publication Date: 2016-02-07

Don't leave course design to trial and error. Is trial and error a key pathway to instructional systems design (ISD)? Does success come only to experienced designers with expert instincts? Prior to the 2000 publication of ISD From the Ground Up, it certainly appeared that way to instructional designers just learning the ropes. Chuck Hodell set out to change that. Known as "the man who wrote the book on ISD--literally," Hodell developed a comprehensive and practical handbook on core ISD practices and principles with a practitioner's eye. His definitive guide is an industry staple currently found on the bookshelves of experienced instructional designers and university students alike. This updated fourth edition covers all the basics and many advanced tenets important to working professionals, especially those entering the field. Stand-alone chapters offer crucial support to practitioners building foundational skills, while in-depth tutorials and rich insights guide the credentialed designer. At a time when skillful curriculum development is valued more than ever, ISD From the Ground Up offers a refresher on objectives, design plans, lesson plans, and even what it takes to facilitate a focus group. "From a field developed out of the need to train military personnel at scale to its current role in enabling virtual learning and training experiences, instructional design has developed into a complex, multifaceted discipline. The modern instructional design process goes by many names (e.g., learning experience design, learning engineering, training and development, organizational development) and continues to adapt with continual changes in society and skill development needs. From mobile to remote learning as well as online and traditional classrooms, instructional designers are faced with meeting the learner where they are to design authentic and engaging learning experiences. Additionally, learning development needs have expanded outside of formal learning into professional development, on the job training, and continuous learning. The Instructional Design Fieldbook provides real-world case studies for those in the field, or entering the field, into many of the areas and situations that instructional designers (IDs) face. This text speaks to the multifaceted discipline of instructional design and supplies resources for those entering or transitioning into the field, specifically K12 education, higher education, corporate, healthcare, entertainment, and nonprofit/government sectors. Case studies and related materials will steer instructional design and learning technology students and those entering or transitioning into specific areas of instructional design towards a genuine understanding of what it is to be an instructional designer"--
